Big I Buzz - November 2, 2022

Posted By IIAW Staff, Wednesday, November 2, 2022

Happy Wednesday! We hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween. In this week's Big I Buzz, we're discussing this month's spotlight benefit, a good reminder for clients with the weekend time change ahead and two new agency resources from Big "I" Risk Management.

This Month's Featured Benefit: Agency Hiring

Does the thought of hiring a new employee leave you overwhelmed? Selecting the right team member is critical to your agency's success, and the IIAW is here to help! Finding and retaining qualified staff continues to be the top concern of IIAW members based on the number of questions and conversations we have had with agencies regarding hiring and recruiting. But now through the IIAW, you can access many staffing solutions to help you ensure that you're finding a top new employee for your agency. We know it can feel like a daunting task, so we have options to help whether you prefer to do it yourself, you need a little bit of help or you just want to outsource the entire hiring process.

The IIAW's partnership with CareerPlug gives our members the opportunity to create their own Careers page and the opportunity to post available job opportunities on a site that enables them to get better candidates to fill any vacancies. Members have the chance to upgrade their FREE CareerPlug subscription at an annual, deeply-discounted rate that will allow them to cross-list their job posts on popular job sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter and more. Learn more about our agency hiring here. Today you can watch the CareerPlug launch video to learn more about the platform and how IIAW members can use the platform.

Reminder for Clients

Sunday, November 6th is Daylight Saving Time. While most clocks will fall back like magic - the batteries in smoke & carbon monoxide alarms won't change themselves. Remind your clients to take this opportunity to test their alarms and change the batteries if needed on Sunday. You can right-click and save the graphic to share on your on social media sites, or you can share directly from the IIAW's Facebook page on Sunday.

Big 'I' Risk Management Shares Two New Agency Resources

The last thing we want to discuss today are the two new agency resources recently launched by the Big "I" Professional Liability team.

1. Commercial Producer Onboarding Guide - this is a self-paced learning resource, providing an overview and learning path through 13 core prerecorded "Lightning Learning" risk management webinars. These webinars are essential tools for both new and seasoned commercial producers. The guide highlights typical commercial lines' exposures that can create E&O claims and provides learning tools to avoid or minimize risk.

2. Sample Agency Procedures Manual - this is a template designed for both personal and commercial lines agency workflow. You can customize this to your agency's procedures and implement it. Failure to follow your written procedures and to update the manual when procedures can result in a client alleging an errors and omissions claim against your agency.

Connect With Carriers Through IMS

Posted By Kaylyn Staudt, Monday, October 17, 2022
Updated: Wednesday, November 9, 2022

For new or smaller agencies, having access to markets right away means more new business opportunities and growth potential for your agency. But building those carrier relationships needed to secure quality appointments can be time-consuming and challenging.

As an IIAW member, you can get a jump start on building those key relationships through Independent Market Solutions (IMS). The IMS program provides access to a broad mix of state-specific standard and niche markets at no additional cost to you. Instead of relying on traditional appointments, IMS creates marketplace leverage through its negotiated contracts and facilitates direct relationships between independent agencies and carriers.

Agents who gain appointments through IMS maintain a direct working relationship with carriers, all while taking advantage of competitive commissions, 100 percent ownership of expirations, low to no volume commitments, and participation in any earned program contingencies. Every IMS agency ALWAYS owns its book of business and, if minimum premium threshold and performance standards are met, direct appointments are available.

Getting started with IMS is easy and doesn’t involve any hidden fees or fine print. All you need to do is sign up online to start connecting with carriers.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month: 4 Studies you Need to Read

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and it's a great time to make sure you're on top of the latest trends in every market to be a trusted advisor to your clients. IA Magazine has put together four major takeaways from studies to help you protect your clients and your agency:

1. Cybersecurity recovery time and costs are much higher than businesses realize. If you receive our Commercial Lines monthly e-newsletter, you'll know that often small businesses tend to underestimate the cost of a cyberattack could be for their company. A recent survey from Nationwide Agency Forward about cybersecurity and business owners found that less than 3 in 10 small business owners report having cyber coverage, compared to 71% of the middle market business. Small business owners are significantly less likely to be taking important precautions with their employees.

2. Cyber threats remain the top overall business concern. The 2022 Travelers Risk Index found that cyber threats were the leading concern, with 59% of survey respondents say that they worry some or a great deal about cyber threats, followed closely by broad economic uncertainty.

3. Consumers are concerned about cyberattacks but haven't insured their digital fingerprints. The Nationwide Agency Forward survey about cybersecurity and business owners also found that consumer concerns about a cyberattack are on the rise. "As many as 58% admitted that they are concerned about falling victim to a cyberattack, which is an increase of nine points since June 2020. Consumers said increased frequency (61%) and sophistication of attacks (51%) in recent years are causes for concern.

4. Average claim cost rises but ransomware claims and waning. "During the first half of 2022, the average cost of a claim for a small business owner increased to $139,000 which is 58% higher than levels during the first half of 2021, according to the mid-year update to Coalition's 2022 Cyber Claims Report." When a Recession Hits, Insurers Shouldn't Stop Marketing

Continuing to market during a downturn sends a powerful message, and it can bring great results. PropertyCasualty360 lists these four reasons to maintain your insurance marketing budget (even during a downturn):

"1. You have less competition - It's been documented that companies tend to drop their marketing and ad spend when in an economic downturn. That means your message won't have to stand out among quite as many competitors! If you're one of the few in your niche who's marketing, you'll stand out far more than in a normal marketing period.

2. You send the message that you’re stable While your competitors reduce their marketing activities, you continue as if your budget for marketing hasn’t reduced – and that sends a powerful message. It gives the impression that your company doesn’t need to reduce its marketing budget, because you’re that stable and successful. That naturally draws others to want to work with you.

3. You prevent the feast-or-famine cycle Running your own business can often feel like going from feast to famine – you’re either far too busy to market, or business has dropped off and you can’t afford to. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By thoughtfully allocating resources towards marketing (including before and during a downturn) you can prevent the worst effects of an economic slowdown from impacting your business. You can keep your business coming in, even when others are struggling.

4. It’s a great time to rebrand or introduce new products Because the background noise is turned down during a recession and fewer companies are competing for your audience’s attention, it can be a great time to rebrand your company or introduce new insurance products. You’ll get a larger audience share for your new initiative, which can make it even more impactful than it would be during a normal period." Read the full article here
