Forbes Advisor: Worst States for Road Rage

Forbes Advisors have recently analyzed drivers in the U.S. to see which states are the worst for road rage.

They've listed the top five states in the U.S. for the most confrontational drivers using a 'confrontational driver score'. The score measured 10 different metrics and these were their findings:

5. New Mexico - confrontational score 91.17 out of 100

4. Oklahoma - 92.86 out of 100 

3. Colorado - 94.74 out of 100

2. Missouri - 99.62 out of 100

1. Utah - 100 out of 100

Wisconsin Property Values See Record Growth in 2022

According to WPR and The Wisconsin Policy Forum, property values in Wisconsin rose 13.8%, overwhelmingly surpassing the previous record increase of 9.6% in 2006. Along with property values, statewide gross property tax also increase. However, this year's property tax levies increased by 1.6%, the smallest annual increase since 2014. Read more here.

When a Recession Hits, Insurers Shouldn't Stop Marketing

Continuing to market during a downturn sends a powerful message, and it can bring great results. PropertyCasualty360 lists these four reasons to maintain your insurance marketing budget (even during a downturn): 

"1. You have less competition - It's been documented that companies tend to drop their marketing and ad spend when in an economic downturn. That means your message won't have to stand out among quite as many competitors! If you're one of the few in your niche who's marketing, you'll stand out far more than in a normal marketing period.

2. You send the message that you’re stable While your competitors reduce their marketing activities, you continue as if your budget for marketing hasn’t reduced – and that sends a powerful message. It gives the impression that your company doesn’t need to reduce its marketing budget, because you’re that stable and successful. That naturally draws others to want to work with you.

3. You prevent the feast-or-famine cycle Running your own business can often feel like going from feast to famine – you’re either far too busy to market, or business has dropped off and you can’t afford to. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By thoughtfully allocating resources towards marketing (including before and during a downturn) you can prevent the worst effects of an economic slowdown from impacting your business. 'People Are Just Driving More Recklessly': Wisconsin On Track for 4th Straight Year With More Traffic Deaths

According to WPR, "Wisconsinites are speeding more and wearing their seat belts less. The state is on track to see more traffic deaths this year than in 2021, which would mark the fourth straight year of increases." WPR conducted an interview with David Pabst of the state Department of Transportation, who called the continuing trends of more reckless driving "alarming". Hot Spots for Hot Cars: Colorado Leads U.S. In Vehicle Theft Rate, California in Overall Thefts

A new report from National Insurance Crime Bureau found that Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Colorado are all places where your car is most likely be gone in 60 seconds. Insurance Journal reported, "Nationwide, 932,329 vehicles were reported stolen to law enforcement in 2021, a 6% increase over 2020, and a 17% increase since 2019. The top five states by volume - Illinois, Florida, Colorado, California and Texas - account for 44% of all vehicle thefts nationwide. Colorado led the nation in 2021 with the highest overall theft rate at 661.21 thefts per 100,000 people, up from 502. 12 in 2020 and an increase of 32%.

Happy Wednesday and end of August! In this week's Big I Buzz, we are discussing the Labor Day travel forecast and U.S. drivers struggle to pay for their auto insurance. 

U.S. Labor Day Weekend Travel Volumes Seen Rebounding to Pre-Pandemic Levels

Americans are squeezing in one last vacation for summer 2022 by heading out on trips for Labor Day weekend. According to U.S. News, "The number of people traveling for the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend is expected to rebound to pre-pandemic levels and possibly set new records in some cases.

A few stats to know from U.S. New's article: 

• Labor Day holiday travel spending is up 17% compared with 2019 levels, according to Adobe Analytics, which measures data across travel, leisure and hospitality sites. 

• Domestic flight prices are expected to be 20% higher than the holiday weekend in 2019 and 2021, according to Hopper. 

• United Airlines Holdings Inc anticipates 2.6 million people will travel with the airline from Thursday through Thursday. The airline carrier said this would nearly match its Labor Day weekend volume of 2019. Along with this statistic, Hopper predicts 12.6 million travelers will fly from Thursday to Monday this weekend. This is 22% higher than passenger volumes in 2019 as reflected in U.S. Transportation Security Administration checkpoint figures. 

• Approximately 1.76 million nights have already been booked across the holiday weekend, a record number of nights for short-term rentals during Labor Day weekend, according to Jamie Lane, Air DNA vice president of research.

One in Three U.S. Drivers Now Struggle to Pay for Auto Insurance

Driving app, Way.com, has roughly 6.5 million drivers using their service to locate parking, schedule car washes, shop for vehicle insurance and more. They interviewed 1,000 drivers to explore how the current economy impacts their insurance usage and choices. According to Property Casualty 360 and the survey, "...34% of respondents are struggling to pay auto insurance premiums. That same percentage of drivers said their current auto insurance costs more than $200 a month. Roughly three out of four of Way.com survey respondents said they've had the same auto insurance carrier for five years or more." Read more here

Auto Premiums Could Climb Another 12% in 2023

A new report from Insurify predicts that insures could pay an average of $1,846 for auto premiums, which would be an increase of 12% from the previous year. The prediction is a result of rising car prices from COVID-19. Between 2020 and 2021, new car prices had spiked 17.2% over previous years. According to a report from the Zebra, "In 2019, the average new car cost was $36,824 and is projected to climb over $47,000 by the close of 2021. Used cars have followed a similar trend, with the average price of a preowned vehicle increasing from $19,863 in 2019 to $28,205 in 2021. Read more from NU Property Casualty 360 here

The Wisconsin OCI requires that WI insurance agents complete 24 hours of continuing education credits (3 of those being credits in ethics) every two years. Still need some CE to fulfill this requirement? Don't worry, the IIAW offers CE classes through ABEN year-round and we also have two ways you can earn FREE CE. First, the IIAW's newest Gold-level Supporting Company Member, PuroClean is hosting FREE CE courses on Friday, September 16th at the Machine Shed in Waukesha. New Requirements for TPMO When Selling Medicare Advantage and/or Part D Plans

Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule that will affect all agents & brokers who sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. The IIAW has put together an informative brochure created by your team at the IIAW to help you navigate these mandatory requirements. The agency will need to update disclaimers (written and verbal) and will also be required to record specified phone conversations as part of this change. All requirements must be implemented by October 1st, 2022. View the brochure outlining the necessary steps to become compliant with the new requirements here

Independent Agents Place Majority of U.S. P&C Insurance: Big I

Big "I" has released their 2022 Market Share Report, and the findings show that the independent agency channel places 63% of all property-casualty insurance written in the U.S. According to Insurance Journal, "Based on 2021 data, this year's report points to independent agencies' dominance in commercial lines, finding that nearly 88%% of all commercial lines written premium is placed by the independent agency channel. The Big "I"'s 2022 Market Share Report summary emphasizes direct premiums, direct losses and the associated direct underwriting results before reinsurance. Happy Wednesday! In this week's Big I Buzz we have news about an actuary's guide on where things stand with auto insurance in 2022 and a reminder to get involved with the IIAW!

As the U.S. personal automobile insurance market combined ratio ends 2021 over 100% for the first time since 2017, many companies reported significantly worse combined ratios in the fourth quarter of 2021 and Q1 2022 compared to prior periods (e.g., Kemper’s Specialty Property & Casualty Insurance reported a 119% combined ratio in Q4 2021 and 109% in Q1 2022).

Additionally, the prior period reserves of many companies are displaying adverse trends, and their current periods are experiencing tumultuous spikes in severity. Therefore, U.S. personal auto insurance companies will face significant challenges for the rest of 2022 and 2023.

Allstate cites the main contributors to increased auto claim severity to be increased used car prices, higher parts and labor costs, medical inflation, and greater attorney representation. Kemper and Progressive also mention an increase in auto claim severity as a driving force in their fourth-quarter results. These factors appear to be affecting trends throughout the entire industry with no end in sight.

Inflation and War Create Upward Cost Pressure
We are all feeling the effects of inflation at the pump and in the grocery store, so it seems only natural that insurers are feeling its effects through an increase in claim severity. A look at the table in Figure 1 shows that the consumer price index (CPI) for all items has increased 11.2% since the beginning of 2020. By comparison, the price of motor vehicle parts and equipment has increased by nearly 15% during the same time period.
